— Seraphine explains to Dean why she fell.
Seraphiel, also known as Seraphine, is an Archangel. She is younger than Michael and Lucifer but older than Raphael and Gabriel. According to Lore, Seraphiel was responsible for being devoted to God and celebrating his holiness in Heaven. She is also known as the "Angel of Purification" because she emanates a fire of pure devotion which can burn away sin.
In Heaven, Seraphiel was known as the "Chief of the Seraphim Angelic Choir", the order of Angels which were closest to God. She was responsible for leading the choir in constant worship of God and teaching them songs that promote the glorification of God.
Seraphiel fell to Earth after Lucifer was imprisoned and Gabriel left Heaven. Rather than live among humanity, Seraphiel wanted to become human, having watched the beauty of God's creation from her post in Heaven. When she fell, Seraphiel ripped away her grace, an act so painful that it caused Seraphiel to lose her sense of who she was and her memories.
Creation and Heaven Edit
God wanted to create and show his sister that they didn't have to be alone anymore, but everything God created, The Darkness destroyed. It wasn't until God created the Archangels, Michael, Lucifer, Seraphiel, Raphael and Gabriel, that his creations survived. God rallied the archangels to go to war against his sister and with their combined strength they managed to trap The Darkness within the Mark of Cain. Seraphiel's devotion to God and her desire to protect him from the Darkness helped to trap her within the Mark of Cain that Lucifer bore. Seraphiel wanted to bear the Mark, as proof of her devotion to her creator, but God feared the corruption that Mark would cause her and believed that Lucifer would be strong enough to resist the evil within the Mark.
After the Darkness was imprisoned within the Mark, God began creating beings once more. His first creations were the Leviathans, ancient primordial monsters. According to Death, God was "concerned they'd chomp the entire petri-dish, so he locked them away." Seraphiel and the other Archangels advised God to create a place where his creatures could be contained with no risk to his future creations, so God created Purgatory where the Leviathans were trapped until Castiel absorbed all the souls in Purgatory.
As humanity flourished in the Garden, Seraphiel was able to watch as Adam became Eve and their five children, including Cain and Abel grew. She was astounded by the beauty in God's final creation and was fascinated by the free will they exhibited - which was a far cry from her role as Chief of the Seraphim Choir.
